COLLABORATION KEY TO FREE ACCESS TO LEGAL INFORMATION IN AFRICA

The Attorney General of the United Republic of Tanzania, Mr. Hamza met senior officials from the Judiciary of Ghana and Nigeria, who visited his Office for the purpose of leaning, sharing and discussing various operations.

Mr Johari met the delegation on June 2, 2025 in his office at Mtumba within Magufuri City at the Capital City of Tanzania, Dodoma.

‘The delegation has come here to learn, share and discuss various operations of the Office of Attorney General, for example the way the Office cooperate with the Judiciary of Tanzania to use the same platform (Tanzania Legal Information Institute-TanzLII) to post various laws, regulations and Rules so that the citizens could in a position to access easily and to be updated from time to time.

‘’Only collaboration among African Countries could be a key success to a free access to legal information to our citizens. There are various groups in the field of law need to be updated each and every time in various issues in the field of law, like Judges, Lawyers, Students, Policy Makers, Researchers. Without cooperation, access to legal information it is going to be a dream,’’ has stated the Attorney General.

The Attorney General added that, the Office appreciate all the initiatives done by the GIZ Coordinator, Mr. Brahim Muhamet to fund the project of scanning Laws, Regulations and Rules in his office, this is something huge and promised once the project is done, the Office will proceed to manage and add more fund to the area so that to meet the vision and mission of the Institution.

He thanked the Director of AfricanLII, Ms. Maria Badeva for her tremendous efforts and his Office appreciates to coordinate with the Judiciary of Tanzania and other African Countries for the purpose of enhancing free access to legal information

Speaking during the occasion, Justice of Appeal and Member of the E-Judgment Committee from Ghana, Hon. Jenniffer Abena Dadzie, thanked the Chief Justice of Ghana to give them permission to come Tanzania and learn Tanzania Legal Information Institute (TanzLII) how it works.

‘We would be very happy to get knowledge from this system, thereafter knowledge acquired we will be used to implement to Ghana Legal Information Institute (GhaLII) for the purpose of attaining sustainability in accessing legal information.

‘’We were advised to come here and learn all about TanzLII, because those who are managing this system are doing very well in terms of access to legal information and we are very sure they can have a lot of knowledge to share with us, hence the knowledge acquired could be a stepping stone to the success of free access of Legal Information at Ghana’’, said Justice Dadzie.  

On her part, the Director of African Legal Information Institute (AfricanLII), Ms. Maria Badeva stated that, collaboration is a catalyst towards to a free access to legal information around the world.

She explained that through collaboration, legal research could be easily be done because there could be a specific platform enriched with legal materials from different jurisdiction and hence researchers could see the opinions from different jurisdictions and hence, they can be in a position to come up with very good research. 

‘’We thank you the Attorney General of the United Republic of Tanzania Hamza Johari for accepting our invitation to discuss and share various issue in the field of Law in your office with the Delegation from Ghana and Nigeria, this shows that through collaboration nothing can be wrong’’, Maria Badeva stated.
